Kenya partners with Everstrong Capital to build a 440km expressway

Kenya has entered into a significant agreement worth $3.6 billion (KSh 470 billion) with Everstrong Capital LLC, a U.S.-based private equity firm, to build the longest toll road in Africa. This 440-kilometer expressway will connect Nairobi and Mombasa, improving transport efficiency across the country.

The Usahihi Expressway will be constructed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, allowing Everstrong Capital to finance, build, manage, and maintain it for 30 years before handing it over to the Kenyan government. Since it will be a tolled road, the investment will be recovered without burdening taxpayers while ensuring high-quality infrastructure.

Announced during President William Ruto’s visit to the United States, this initiative is set to transform Kenya’s transport system. It will drastically reduce the travel time between Nairobi and Mombasa from over 10 hours to just 4.5 hours, enhancing mobility for both businesses and individuals.

This infrastructure project is expected to boost trade by improving cargo transportation from Mombasa’s port to Nairobi and other regions. Thousands of jobs will be created during construction, and businesses will benefit from better logistics and connectivity.

In addition to economic gains, the expressway incorporates sustainability measures. Features such as electric vehicle charging stations, designated wildlife corridors, and eco-friendly rest stops aim to minimize environmental impact. Overpasses will help protect animal migration patterns, making it one of Africa’s most environmentally responsible road projects.

The agreement also reinforces Kenya’s ties with the United States, highlighting its role in America’s strategy for infrastructure investments in Africa. U.S. President Joe Biden described the project as an example of ethical, transparent, and sustainable development.

“This isn’t just about roads, it’s about connecting people, driving commerce, and building a future of shared prosperity,” Biden said.

Construction is scheduled to commence in early 2025 and is projected to take between three and four years. Upon completion, the Usahihi Expressway will be a symbol of Kenya’s advancement, attracting more investments and setting new standards for infrastructure across the continent.
