President William Ruto has said that the government has put aside Ksh 1.5 billion to purchase land from absentee landlords and settle squatters at the Coast. He mentioned that this plan is meant to resolve old land disputes and give residents title deeds.

During an event in Mombasa County, President Ruto gave 450 title deeds to Changamwe residents. Before that, he checked on the construction of a 2,100-unit housing project in Changamwe Constituency. He pointed out that the project would provide affordable homes and reduce the need for slum living once completed.

“This transformative initiative is also expanding our manufacturing industry in the housing value chain and empowering low-income Kenyans to become home owners,” he said.

At the opening of Likoni Technical Vocational Education and Training College on Monday, the President stressed the importance of issuing title deeds to solve land ownership challenges in the coastal region.

“We are issuing title deeds in the coastal region to address the longstanding land problem that has made many residents squatters, denying them the socio-economic benefits of land ownership,” he said.

Additionally, President Ruto instructed the Coast regional security team to recover land meant for a technical training college in Mombasa County that had been taken illegally. He said the 12-acre Likoni Technical Vocational Education and Training College land would be fenced off starting Tuesday.

“We are keen to ensure that title deeds are processed quickly to solve land problems at the Coast,” the President said.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki urged leaders to come together to tackle the issues affecting Kenyans. Meanwhile, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir defended former Prime Minister Raila Odinga against criticism over the formation of a broad-based government. He stated that ODM supporters should not be left in the opposition, even though Mr. Odinga did not win the African Union Commission chairmanship position.
