President William Ruto has sent his condolences to the people of the United States after a tragic air crash happened in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
In his message, Ruto expressed that Kenya stands with America in this difficult time after an accident involving a passenger jet and a military helicopter.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, a PSA Airlines jet operating as American Airlines Flight 5432 crashed into a US Army helicopter while approaching Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the terrible air accident in Washington, D.C.
“May the Almighty give strength to the families, President Donald Trump, and the people of the United States of America during this difficult moment,” Ruto posted on X on Thursday, January 30, 2024.
The mid-air collision led to a search and rescue mission in the Potomac River, where, according to CBS, 18 bodies have so far been recovered as teams continue searching in the freezing waters.
As authorities investigate the cause of the accident, flights at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport have been grounded.
American Airlines confirmed that the Bombardier CRJ700 had taken off from Wichita, Kansas, and was carrying 60 passengers along with four crew members.
The Pentagon reported that the military helicopter involved was a Sikorsky H-60, which had three US soldiers on board after departing from Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
Former US President Donald Trump also addressed the incident, saying he had been informed about the crash and would share more updates soon.
“I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident that just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise,” Trump said in a statement.
The investigation into the accident continues as rescue efforts remain underway.
