There was drama at ACK Buruburu when officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Buruburu Police stormed the church and arrested Pastor Peter Kinuthia Waithunguri. He is accused of fraudulently acquiring a piece of land belonging to an elderly woman, leaving her homeless.
Pastor Waithunguri allegedly took advantage of 75-year-old Margaret Watiri Ndung’u, who was struggling to clear a loan of KSh 670,000 from Mwananchi Credit. Desperate to save her property, she was introduced to the pastor, who promised to help settle her debt. However, she was made to sign documents that transferred ownership of her land to Waithunguri.
The truth came to light when the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line passed through the land, prompting the National Land Commission to offer compensation. While following up on the payment, Watiri discovered that the property was no longer in her name and had an outstanding loan attached to it.
Upon being summoned by the DCI, Waithunguri admitted that he had used the land as collateral. This led Watiri to take legal action, filing a case in court to reclaim her property.
A shocked vicar at ACK Buruburu revealed that Waithunguri worked as a deacon, and no one in the church leadership was aware of his alleged fraudulent dealings. His arrest has since drawn attention to the case, as the elderly woman continues to fight for her rightful ownership of the land.
