Gachagua praises Raila’s strong AUC bid, welcomes him back
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has shared a heartfelt message with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga following his second-place finish in the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship election.
In a statement on Sunday, February 16, 2025, Gachagua praised Raila for his strong campaign and unwavering dedication, emphasizing that his efforts brought pride to Kenya. He also noted that Raila’s bold attempt reflected Kenya’s optimism and its hope for Africa and beyond.
“Baba @RailaOdinga, you fought bravely, showing energy, resilience, and the fearless spirit of the Lion of Africa. You secured a credible second place while proudly carrying Kenya’s flag in a competitive AUC Chairmanship race,” Gachagua said.
He added that Raila did not lose but rather demonstrated the true spirit of Kenya and Africa. Gachagua highlighted that his efforts symbolized hope for the continent and the world.
Gachagua also underlined Raila’s importance in Kenya’s political landscape, stating that his leadership is crucial in addressing national challenges. He welcomed Raila back home, affirming that the election results did not diminish his leadership abilities or his commitment to the country.
“Africa needed you, but in His wisdom, God determined that Kenya, your homeland, still requires your leadership. We, your fellow Kenyans, still have unfinished business with you as we work towards rebuilding our nation,” Gachagua said.
He reassured Raila that the outcome of the AUC election does not in any way undermine his leadership or his ability to contribute to Kenya’s progress.
“Welcome back home, Raila Odinga. Keep your head high—East or West, home is best. You made Kenya proud,” he added.
Gachagua’s Support for Raila
Before the AUC Chairmanship election, Gachagua openly supported Raila’s candidacy.
On February 14, 2025, he posted on his official X account, stating: “Kenya’s very own Rt. Hon. @RailaOdinga is the best choice for the African Union Commission chairmanship.
Africa needs a strong leader, and Raila’s dedication to Pan-Africanism is unmatched.”
Gachagua further mentioned that Raila’s win would not only reinforce his Pan-African vision but also serve as a victory for Kenya.
“As a continent, we need a leader like @RailaOdinga to bridge the gap between Anglophone and Francophone Africa and guide us toward a united future. His success in Addis Ababa would symbolize his lifelong commitment to Pan-Africanism. A win for Raila would be a win for Kenya,” he stated.
Though Raila did not secure the position, Gachagua remains confident that his leadership and influence will continue to shape Kenya’s and Africa’s future.
