The education sector is currently struggling with a serious financial crisis due to a budget deficit of Sh 27 billion, which might result in delays in paying thousands of teachers. This concern was raised by Bellio Kipsang, the principal secretary of education, while addressing the national assembly education committee.
Dr. Kipsang stressed that the financial gap in the sector could have severe consequences, affecting key services.
One of the most impacted areas is the Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE) program, which faces a funding shortfall of Sh 21.85 billion. Despite the government allocating Sh 54.886 billion to the program, the required amount stands at Sh 76.654 billion, leaving students without adequate financial support.
Additionally, Dr. Kipsang pointed out that the funds allocated per learner in primary, junior secondary, and secondary schools are not enough, meaning some students miss out on crucial financial assistance.
This has led to growing concerns about whether schools can manage their operational costs, including paying teachers on time and maintaining necessary improvements.
The situation is alarming and demands urgent action from all stakeholders in the education sector to prevent further disruptions.
