A deadly accident on Saturday, March 8, along the busy Kitale-Webuye Highway

A deadly accident on Saturday, March 8, along the busy Kitale-Webuye Highway led to the tragic deaths of five people.

According to witnesses, a truck traveling from Webuye lost control and crashed into two boda boda riders and roadside vendors in the Matunda area. Reports indicate that the truck had brake failure, causing the driver to lose control before it overturned.

One witness shared, "The truck was moving from Webuye to Kitale when it lost control near the Kiminini Matunda bridge and overturned, killing five people. After losing control, it hit the two motorcycle riders head-on, killing them instantly. Shockingly, the truck crossed over to their lane before knocking them down and rolling over," as reported by K24 TV.

Another person at the scene added, "The vehicle lost its brakes, veered off its lane, and struck both boda boda riders and water vendors who were at the scene."

Following the accident, angry residents protested, blocking the highway and causing a major traffic jam. Despite the presence of police officers, the residents, who blamed the truck driver for the crash, set the vehicle on fire.

Locals urged the government to put up traffic signs in the area to help prevent future accidents.

Meanwhile, in another accident in Bungoma County, one person lost their life in a crash on the Webuye-Eldoret Road near the Kaburengu interchange, a known accident blackspot. The accident, which happened on the evening of Tuesday, March 4, involved several vehicles, including a truck carrying molasses and a school bus with teachers and students on board.

According to police reports, the truck driver died at the scene, while seven others suffered serious injuries.

Additionally, in another separate accident along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway in the Kinungi area, several people were lucky to escape with injuries.

St John Ambulance Kenya reported that the accident in Kinungi Soweto involved a matatu and a personal vehicle. The matatu, which belonged to Classic Luxury Shuttle, was carrying 16 passengers who sustained injuries. The cause of the accident was unclear, but photos from the scene showed significant damage, indicating the impact was severe.
