When it comes to staying hydrated, most of us reach for a glass of water without a second thought. However, a recent study from St. Andrews University School of Medicine in Scotland suggests that milk might actually be a more effective way to maintain long-term hydration.

The Study’s Findings

Researchers at St. Andrews aimed to create a beverage hydration index to see how different drinks compare in keeping our bodies hydrated. Surprisingly, the results showed that both skim and whole milk are more hydrating than water. But how is this possible?

The key lies in milk’s unique combination of nutrients. Milk contains fat, lactose (a type of sugar), and sodium—all of which play a role in fluid retention. Sodium, an essential electrolyte, helps the body maintain a balance of fluids. As a result, the body holds onto the fluids in milk longer than it would with plain water.

Other Hydrating Beverages

Interestingly, the study also found that orange juice can be a surprisingly hydrating option, thanks to its nutrient content. However, it’s important to note that not all beverages are created equal. Sugary drinks or those high in caffeine may have the opposite effect, leading to dehydration over time.

Should Milk Replace Water?

Despite milk’s hydrating benefits, experts advise against making it your primary source of hydration. Milk contains calories and other nutrients that, if consumed in excess, might not be ideal for everyone. Water remains the best go-to drink for hydration throughout the day.

However, incorporating milk into your routine, especially after a workout, can be a smart choice. Its blend of protein, carbohydrates, and electrolytes makes it an excellent option for recovery.

In summary, while milk might be more hydrating than water in some situations, it’s best used as a complement to water rather than a replacement. And if you’re looking for a hydrating alternative to water, consider a glass of fruit juice—just be sure it’s free of added sugars!
