The first ever Mazingira Day will be commemorated on Thursday, 10 October 2024 along the Nairobi Arboretum with Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale presiding over the occasion.
This new holiday that was recently approved by the president of the Republic of Kenya William Ruto is aimed to raise the attention of the citizens on global warming as well other issues related.
The occasion will formally commence at 7 a.m. when CS Duale and Forestry Principal Secretary Gitonga Mugambi will lead other senior government officials into the grounds. The day calls for immediate and collective intervention for the stability of the environment for the future generations.
The CS has also asked the citizens to take part in clean-up operations, planting of trees, among other activities directed at preserving the environment.
“As he explained, the day provides ample opportunity to intensify environmental efforts in the context of reaching climate and anthropogenic disaster, biodiversity decline, and environmental pollution challenges. He further reinforced the importance of all citizens getting involved in the national response to restore the environment which is in tandem with the Kenyan National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Programme.
Key Initiatives for Mazingira Day:
The Cleaning Activity: People are called on to include clean-ups of domestic waste, the accumulation of litter from the streets, garbage disposal activities, litter picking in public gardens, and sand beaches as well.
Tree Planting: The goal is to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 as part of a national effort to restore 10.6 million hectares of degraded land.
Environmental Forums: Discussions focusing on sustainability and the circular economy principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling waste will take place across the country.
This particular holiday seeks to encourage greater responsibility towards the environment, and assist not only in national targets but towards international objectives, fighting climate change, and engaging in sustainable development.
For the residents of Nairobi, the CS indicated that Mazingira Day is useful because people can tree grow and participate in clean-ups so that everyone takes part in the restoration of the ecosystems of Kenya.
