Gomora girl dies after eating 'poisoned snacks'
Residents of Alexandra are outraged after a 9-year-old girl died and her mother and 4-year-old sibling were hospitalized, allegedly due to poisoned snacks consumed on November 2.
Gauteng police are urging calm while an investigation is underway. Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a police spokesperson, stated, “An inquest case is currently being investigated following the incident.
According to a report, the police in Alexandra responded to a call regarding a mother and her two kids who were experiencing stomach aches. Regrettably, the nine-year-old was declared dead while the mother and the four-year-old are still in hospital.
A team of police investigators in collaboration with health experts and other role players will be investigating the allegations made concerning the food consumed by the victims before falling ill.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, called on the public to allow investigators the space needed for their work, expressing condolences to the family and hoping for a swift recovery for the survivors. He added, “We have established a team of experts that are working with our partners in government to investigate the death.”
Tensions in Alexandra are high, with angry residents reportedly protesting and targeting the tuck shop where the family allegedly bought the snacks. Conflicting reports on the girl’s age emerged, with police reporting she was nine, while her father told SABC that she was ten, soon turning eleven.
The father described how, after eating the snacks, his daughter began to experience chest pains and was rushed to Masakhane Clinic, where she tragically passed away shortly after arrival. The mother, experiencing severe stomach pains, and the four-year-old boy were later taken to Edenvale Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
