Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye met with Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi on Sunday morning at Ndjili Airport in Kinshasa
Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye met with Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi on Sunday morning at Ndjili Airport in Kinshasa. Their meeting started at 8 AM and was private. No official statements were made after their discussion.
"Pas de déclaration à la presse," confirmed Tina Salama, spokesperson for Félix Tshisekedi, to ACTUALITE.CD. No details were shared about what they talked about.
Meanwhile, security issues in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continue, with fighting intensifying between the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC), supported by Burundian troops, and the AFC/M23 rebels, especially in South Kivu province.
On January 31, during a meeting with diplomats in Bujumbura, Ndayishimiye spoke about his concerns regarding regional stability. He criticized Rwanda's involvement in the crisis and said his peace initiative for eastern DRC could have worked if all sides had respected their commitments. He also accused Kigali of helping rebel groups, including Red Tabara, which has been attacking Burundi.
As the situation worsened, the Burundian president made an urgent appeal to the international community to stop the crisis from escalating and to prevent a humanitarian disaster. Burundian troops, deployed in the DRC as part of military cooperation, continue to fight alongside FARDC against AFC/M23 rebels, despite some reports about a possible withdrawal.
