Amb. Ntahiraja urges EU to stop backing Rwanda, push for peace in Kivu crisis to prevent regional war

Burundi’s ambassador, Ntahiraja, has urged the European Union to stop backing Rwanda

Burundi’s ambassador, Ntahiraja, has urged the European Union to stop backing Rwanda amid the Kivu crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He warned that continuing this support could lead to a regional war and strain relations with the EU. Instead, he stressed the importance of peace and dialogue.

Brussels (Belgium, EU), February 13, 2025 – As tensions escalate in the Kivu region of the DRC, Burundi’s well-regarded Ambassador to Belgium, Mr. Ntahiraja Thérence, attended the regular session of the Africa-EU Parliamentary Assembly.

In this challenging context, Ambassador Ntahiraja criticized the European Union’s support for the Rwandan army (RDF/M23), calling for an immediate halt to the assistance that fuels conflict in the region. This ongoing crisis has already forced millions of Congolese to flee their homes.

He emphasized that the EU should focus on fostering peace and dialogue to prevent the conflict from spiraling into a regional war and causing a lasting divide between Africa and the EU.

In today’s multipolar world, where BRICS+ are gaining influence against the American Neoliberal Unipolar Globalization (GUAN), Africa—particularly regions like the Great Lakes, the Sahel, and Sudan—stands at the center of ongoing geopolitical conflicts.
