DRC PM Judith Suminwa to Chair UN Security Council Debate on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has announced that Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka will chair a high-level public debate at the UN Security Council on July 8, 2026, under the theme:

"Women, Peace and Security: Honouring the Promise of International Law to Survivors of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence."

As the current President of the UN Security Council, the DRC says it will use its presidency to place civilian protection, the fight against impunity, and the Women, Peace and Security agenda at the center of international discussions.

Kinshasa says the debate will amplify the voices of survivors while calling on the international community to strengthen accountability, improve access to justice and reparations, and better protect civilians affected by armed conflict.

The discussion will also examine the links between sexual violence, war economies, and the illegal exploitation of natural resources, particularly in eastern DRC.

The event is part of the DRC's broader July presidency programme, which also includes:

▪️ July 13: Arria-formula meeting on natural resources, conflict and peace.

▪️ July 21: High-level debate on natural resource governance as a foundation for peace, security and prosperity.

The Congolese government says its presidency aims to use the country's experience to advance international efforts for peace, justice and civilian protection.
